CRISPR-Engineered Drought-Tolerant Crops: Field-Trial Evidence on Yield Stability, Ecological Containment Strategies, and Regulatory Gaps for Global Food Security
CRISPR-engineered drought-tolerant crops have advanced from proof-of-concept to field-validated agricultural strategy. Across 2025 and 2026, multi-location trials in maize, rice, and potato demonstrated that targeted SDN-1 edits can preserve meaningful portions of baseline yield under severe water stress without consistently imposing the yield penalties that have historically undermined conventional stress-tolerance breeding programs. The strongest evidence to date comes from edits affecting ethylene signaling, cytokinin metabolism, and stomatal regulation, all of which help decouple drought survival from outright reproductive collapse.
